Ever since I posted that story about the petite serene white cottage by Workstead (in Hudson, NY) with those tiny bedrooms, I have been thinking about the beauty of small bedroom decor and small bedroom ideas for those of us lucky enough to have them (seriously…they are cute as a button!).
We know a picture is worth a thousand words, so let’s consider some lovely small bedroom ideas and smart bedroom decor inspiration from this gallery of beautiful small bedrooms discovered on Architectural Digest and Remodelista. 1. Skip the clunky closet door (above).
Ya know? This drywalled door-less closet looks amazing, and the section closest to the bed could even include a simple shelf for a clock.
2. Add an unexpected poster bed.
Not that this would be the easiest bed to make (definitely do a series of warm-up stretches first), but isn’t it visually interesting and comfy looking?

Isn’t this a lovely way to cover walls and ceilings?

4. Use vertical space intelligently.
I love the interest these minimal hanging lights add.

What lovely eye-candy to see this morning! Yum!
I’ve never quite understood the ‘need’ for Americans to have large bedrooms. Well, yes I am an American but I grew up in a small house with 8 people sharing what little space we had. “Back in the day” bedrooms were not used the way we think of them today. They were basically a place for a bed and a little clothing storage.
Today people see ‘normal’ sized bedrooms (that is around 10′ x 10′ or maybe 12′ x 12′ ) and they say “Oh it’s so small!” Well I suppose when people think that a bedroom must need to function as a living room, TV room, dressing room, office et al, it needs to be big. But maybe the idea of paring down and keeping the bedroom for sleep is one that should be explored again.
Bedroom: a simply but comfortably decorated space where obtaining respite, quiet and escape from the toils of the day is paramount. Now that’s the ticket 😉
So true how the function of bedrooms has expanded over the years in America. I wonder if bigger bedrooms are a result of less togetherness? Small can be beautiful! Thanks for reading, Connie, and adding depth to the conversation. 🙂
An open closet or clothes hung on a rolling rack only look good because they are color coded. A mish mash of clothes, like most of us have, would look like clutter. Thoughts…
For some reason I’m drawn to the four poster in the tiny room. The pictures hung at eye level while reclining is brilliant.
It’s definitely for minimalists! I have industrial rolling racks that don’t look too bad for clothing, but it takes some extra discipline. Right now they are in a guest bedroom which doesn’t have a decent closet. 🙂
There certainly is something to be said about small and cozy. I love these bedrooms, as they are the kind of rooms I am constantly designing for my small cabin renovations. Thanks for more great inspiration.
I am in awe of what you are doing as a renovator, Celia! Thanks for reading and adding to the beauty here. 🙂
