Modern farmhouse decor, French Farmhouse decor, French Country decorating ideas and interiors, and European Country decor style are topics I never tire of since for me they are suggestive of a reverence for nature and the countryside, charming kitchens, living rooms, and bedrooms decorated with an elegant yet unfussy, effortless ease which lends itself to tranquility, and a timelessness so that home decor and furniture chosen for designs today will not come off as dated and tired a few tomorrows from now.
My favorite modern farmhouse muse…I suppose that is why so often when I get daydreamy about European Country interior design or modern farmhouse decor, my thoughts turn to the beautiful architectural and design work of Giannetti Home. Projects by Giannetti Home stand out for me as a rich source of design inspiration.
A longtime reader of Brooke Giannetti’s blog Velvet and Linen, readers were fortunate enough to have a front row seat to the birth of Patina Farm, the Giannetti family modern farmhouse with European country inspired interiors in Ojai, California. We watched the home take shape beginning with sketches from architect and artist Steve Giannetti, who with Brooke, conceived a property that would serve the needs of a family expanding with animals (mini donkeys, pygmy goats, babydoll sheep, chickens, and pups!). Do you have the book? It’s a must read!
Watching their modern farmhouse built before our eyes…With Brooke’s chronicling of Patina Farm’s creation on her blog, we were able to see the frame stage, an up close look at raw materials, the beginnings of groin vaulted ceilings, window openings, built-ins, and more so that it felt at times I was in school, devouring this delicious evolution. As more layers were applied, the modern farmhouse home began to take on a fuller identity: modern and custom oversized steel windows, a thin coat of plaster material applied to walls (requiring no paint), prefinished French oak wide plank flooring, limestone, and glass walls for an outdoor shower. I think Brooke’s readers fell deeply in love with Patina Farm from the beginning as insiders to its creation and construction as the Giannettis were in the throes of building and decorating it!
The excitement of the European Country inspired decor coming together…What a thrill to see Brooke dressing the European country inspired modern farmhouse in the couple’s favorite things: unlaquered brass, reclaimed materials, European antiques, Aidan Gray lighting, velvet, linen, and all things patina perfect. Patina? The Giannettis kind of wrote the book on it.
How does such a project affect me on a personal level, here in the heartland as I consider what our next DIY home projects might be at our fixer upper? Well, that’s easy. Deeply. I’m in the dream phase right now of a couple things. First, this property could use more outdoor storage for two motorcycles, a snow blower, a canoe…you get the picture. My husband and I prefer a tidy garage, and that just has not been possible with the overflow of oversized essentials. Oh yeah, and I forgot to mention the tractor (well, a riding mower tractor). There’s no room for seasonal stuff which I would like to store in a small outbuilding.
Not so pretty choices for outbuildings…But have you looked at readymade garden sheds and storage sheds? Some of them look pretty awful. Not a big deal if you aren’t confronted with the sight of it constantly, but the ideal place for our shed would be just outside the kitchen. So back to the dreaming I mentioned…I’m thinking wouldn’t it be something to construct something pretty which could house the stuff, buffer the neighbor’s home, and serve as a pretty focal point? Is that even possible?
That awesome mini donkey house, customized from a kit…A girl can dream, and so she shall. I am digging in the Patina Farm archives to gather information about how Brooke and Steve erected their guest house, though it’s more likely I’ll need the info about the construction of the donkey house, which as I recall, they built from a kit at Home Depot. Don’t you love the idea of taking a generic shell built from a kit and customizing it to taste? You do? Then could you email my husband and tell him what a swell prospect it is? Merci beaucoup.
A guesthouse every French inspired modern farmhouse design geek wants to be invited to…I’m gonna be studying some plans and as I said, peeking at what the Giannettis did for their donkey house, and in the mean time, let’s peek at the guest house at Patina Farm (the very one which thousands of instagrammers and blog readers have invited themselves to with a wink and a smile!).
Oh, you ARE special, Patina Farm modern farmhouse with your antique reclaimed building materials, including antique French terra cotta roof tiles and vintage barn beams juxtaposed with contemporary details such as sheets of glass and steel windows. Let’s be inspired by Giannetti Home magic with a closer look at the guest house.
