We’re revisiting and taking a closer look at a magnificent rustic modern farmhouse by Jennifer Bunsa in Hudson, NY…this time noting some specific decor ideas that contribute to this country home’s funky, Bohemian, and chic allure. What I find so unusually refreshing about this home’s design is how luxurious it feels in its rustic refinery. Rustic refinery? Isn’t that an oxymoron? In this case, at least to my eyes, both descriptions apply. Without the more refined elements in the decor and design (look at the beautiful finishes and luxe furniture…it’s not shabby chic time!), the farmhouse style interiors might just be another example of modern country style. And without the rugged character of all the rusticity in the beams, posts, wood floors, and shiplap, the spaces might read modern minimal and feel a bit cold. Combining the rustic and refined tells a most pleasing, artful, character-full design story that feels timeless and appropriate for the setting in the country.
In the kitchen, Jennifer Bunsa has used country style materials in a modern graphic manner. The pattern of the backsplash tiles combine for a country quilt-like effect, topped with horizontal bands of shiplap which add geometric clean lines, order, and interest. Breaking up the tile also humanizes the space since the ceilings are soaring. Likewise, the kitchen window is scaled to be cozy and more vintage-like in the lofty room.
In the living spaces, modern furniture is warmed by leather and linen upholstery. While spare, they don’t feel cold or standoffish. The palette is restrained, and walls are white, but the introduction of various textures (plaster, stone, wood, cement, brick, wool) contributes balance and interest.
I have sprinkled in some decor suggestions which to me echo some of the repetitive themes in the spaces that follow. Affiliate links will not cost you extra when used for purchases and may earn me a small commission.
