Raise your hand if your heart beats faster when you confront the charm, patina, timelessness, and effortless elegance of a beautifully appointed apartment in Paris in person or in photos! Gurrrrl, svp (that’s pleeeeez in France-ville)…I’m waving mine in the air. Oh, kids. I have Paris PINS for you to PIN today, and I hope you’ll snag em all!
And I wish we could simply paint our walls the perfect creamy white, buy a few vintage chairs, let our romantic drapes pool on the floor, and BOOM arrive at the perfect “Paris apartment-ish feel” interior. But there is simply no substitute (in my head, I am Catherine Deneuve saying soob-stee-toot with a killer French accent) for: historical architecture, patina-ed herringbone wood floors showing fabulous age, heavenly pink Parisian light, years of collecting decor and art, and the proportions of many Paris apartments which can vary significantly from the proportions of spaces outside of the city.
We should chat for a sec about how we should NOT approach this decor style. Perhaps the worst thing one can do is buy what is on a typical mainstream “Paris apartment” bestseller list at any given time which may include: cheesy signs that say Paris, anything with dollar-store feather boas and plastic rhinestones attached, frilly polyester everything, and awful art starring French poodles (with some exceptions of course!). Instead, it will serve us well to gaze closer at Paris apartment interiors and know we can perhaps capture a bit of the magic or essence but not the full package. What we are seeing upon deeper study of these interiors is decades of living, layering, and subtracting to achieve.
If you need proof of the magnitude of this lofty challenge (to arrive at spaces on par with their French counterparts), consider how homeowners with deep pockets turn to reclaimed stone, reclaimed wood, reclaimed doors, historical architectural salvage, and mortgage-priced antiques in their own attempts to bring home the je ne sais quoi. It is no easy feat.
So have I sufficiently snapped you out of your Paris apartment decor trance completely with my reality check? Ha! Let’s keep our focus narrowed to educating ourselves more about the decor milieu there and how the French live with objects, furnishings, space, and the light. In this way, we won’t be swayed by the marketplace into decorating spaces which could feel contrived, overworked, overbaked, kitschy, too precious, too frou frou, and here’s the biggie: too INAUTHENTIC. If your decor doesn’t feel natural in the space where you live, you should change it. There. I’ve said it. There are things far more important than decor, but since we’re talking about spaces at home where you will interacting, resting, dining, and making memories, why not be intentional and have some fun in the process?
Keeping all of this in mind, I offer a little list of 10 ideas to ignite your imagination and perhaps help you to see with more clarity how the ingredients and dynamics in the decor mix combine to impart a sense of beautiful romance.
