A Lofty & Lovely Farmhouse with Rustic Elegant Decor to Fall For!

A Lofty & Dreamy Farmhouse with Rustic Elegant Decor to Fall For! #modernfarmhouse #rusticdecor

If this lovely and lofty farmhouse (which is a lesson in rustically elegant country style) in Hudson, NY, proves anything, it’s that modern farmhouse style has far more interpretations than we can imagine. Just when you think you have seen your share of white board and batten farmhouses with black steel windows and walls of shiplap springing up everywhere in suburbia and beyond, you come across a home like this one designed by Jennifer Bunsa, and if you’re me, you simply LOSE YOUR FRIGGIN MARBLES.

There is just so much thoughtfulness and keen collecting going on here. It seems apparent the owner loves nature, rugged natural materials, modern sleek furniture, and pleasing geometric patterns. The loftiness of these spaces, quite frankly, blows me away, as does the playfulness with scale and the tasteful, sensual marriages of rough and luxe.

While everyone and their granny seems to be hanging a retro beaded macrame something or another on their wall, just wait til you glimpse the owl keeping watch over a room in this amazing farmhouse…now THAT’s a deliciously whimsical riff on a home decor staple I recall as a child in the ’70s!

I have never seen a farmhouse kitchen design quite like this one with its genius mix of rugged charm, country sweetness, nostalgia, New England sensibility, and globally informed luxe. I bet you’ll agree. In spite of its lofty ceilings, its design keeps it feeling very human-scaled, welcoming, and cozy. The Bohemian bath is so chic and freshly unique, it’ll instantly kill you smack dab in the face, so try not to utter curse words at your own bath after admiring the one below. (I’m always saying it, “Admire without the need to acquire–this skill changes everything!” and so I’ll try my best to take my own advice.)

I’m not cool or young enough to appreciate the bedroom which surprised me with the design’s austerity and moody point of view. I need my bedroom to be a tranquil haven of a cloud where I can dream, retreat, and heal from the residue of daily days. For me that means soft romance and comfy cozy unfussy simple lovely. (The shadows cast by the arms on those modern bedside wall sconces would likely scare the pants off of me in the middle of the night, and midlife mama here already has sufficient insomnia triggers!) Thoughts? I’m also surprised there isn’t more greenery alive in rooms throughout the home, given the abundance of natural light and the decidedly natural, organic vibe.

Meet me at the finish line to dish about any design details from this modern farmhouse you found especially beautiful or curious.

Looks so much rustic and industrial as well. I like all of them. The chandelier in the bath is looking soo good and artistic. Thanks for sharing such extraordinary element, Michele. And Happy new years ๐Ÿ™‚

I would freeze to death in this house for lack of anything that looked warm. Being different doesn’t necessarily mean physical comfort will be the results.

I totally get it! I also know styling a place for a shoot is not the same as styling a place where you hang your hat and let your hair down. Maybe things get cozy when the camera crew departs? ๐Ÿ™‚

I think it looks cool but Mr. Owl is a little disturbing ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

    • January 17, 2018 / 8:37 am

Way too cool for school and me! But I like the Mister…what’s disturbing is a real live owl in your backyard staring at you in the daylight, which is what I have here! :0

Oh Michele, I give up, my search is over, I want to move in.
I love the grey French bed that can be found at and online at Anthropologie. Vera, @rowhomesandcobblestones has it in pale grey.

I canโ€™t get over the free hanging beams, what a home to take a deep breath in.

Hi Michele, How did I miss this macrame trend? Love the rustic farmhouse but not so much the owl๐Ÿ™‚

I loved the use of rustic beams, windows, rugs, floors, lighting, kitchen island, and interesting furniture choices. Some of the tile choices weren’t my favorites, but hey, diversity is why we all love your blogs. You keep us informed how others live and I, for one, love that. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • January 17, 2018 / 12:57 pm

Thanks for your kindness, Rhonda. You’re a gem. I hear you about the tile choices – hard for many of us to imagine not staying neutral or with a safe choice for a kitchen backsplash or shower! That’s one of the things I like about the boldness of this design. It appears they are designing to taste and not for anyone other than the homeowners! ๐Ÿ™‚

It really is unusual and historical, isn’t it? Have a lovely weekend, Colleen! ๐Ÿ™‚
