House Tour: Sarah Richardson’s Modern Farmhouse in Ontario

Designer Sarah Richardson knows her way around classic elegance, timeless interiors, fresh traditional, and modern farmhouse style and has been inspiring us for many years with projects around the globe. But Sarah’s latest creative coup is her family’s off-the-grid country home in Creemore, Ontario. Off the grid?

Building a home off the main power grid, which can service the needs of an entire family, requires clever design decisions and innovative materials. Sarah Richardson and husband Alex created the infrastructure to run the home, while leveraging unique sources of heat and lighting throughout, utilized a rebuilt heritage barn to house both the garage and the solar panels to generate electricity, and overcame the challenges of digging a well to pull enough water to serve the family’s needs. This is their forever home!

Can you even imagine such a lofty goal? The project recently aired in a 6-part television series on HGTV Canada, and there are so many gorgeous details to note that it will take a few posts to share it all.

Take a look at this short video of the living room:

In case Sarah Richardson is a designer you haven’t followed lately, here’s what she has been up to:

By the late 90’s, Sarah realized that she could carve a niche in the emerging world of design TV by sharing her practical, endearing and inspiring approach to décor and design with viewers. Sarah launched her first TV series for HGTV in 2000, Room Service. 17 years later, Sarah is the host, co-creator and co-producer of over 250 episodes of design television that span seven hit HGTV series targeted directly to the needs of a contemporary audience. Room Service, Design Inc., Sarah’s House, Sarah’s Cottage, Sarah’s Rental Cottage, Sarah 101, and Real Potential are a collection of lifestyle television series dedicated to tackling the demands and design challenges of modern living.

Have followed Sarah Richardson for years and miss her programs. Happy she is back on with her new home. I did already hear about this project, so I went out on internet to see if I could view the episodes it at my location. I saw the final reveal episodes with Sarah and Tommy were out on YouTube where they took each room and showed it completed, so I watched them there. Seems like her main colors are gray, blues throughout the house. I did miss in this house as she used in previous houses where she used pops of colors in fabrics, rugs, bedding. Very serene, muted colors here.

I’m so happy to see her and Tommy back on the air too! I hope they make some appearances in the USA. I actually thought this house had plenty of color, and I have the pictures to prove it! Stay tuned. She uses bright blues in the girls’ bedrooms, there’s a royal blue bathroom, and a guest bedroom with lots of cherry and prints. 🙂

I used to love her shows on HGTV! Always admired her style and I can see by her new home that it’s still going strong!

She’s so fun and always brings something fresh. What I love about this project is she shares a ton of sources, and I recognized some pieces from Wayfair immediately which is great since they’re affordable. 🙂

I’ve followed Sarah for years. She and Tommy do amazing work together. I like that she combines old with new and high end with thrifting finds. Her homes never look like she bought from a single showroom but more gathered. I like the neutral tone of this home and while it suits farm house living it is still elegant. Bring on some more, please!

Hi Joanna! YES. And I love the energy between Sarah and Tommy and all the behind the design stuff we are always treated to like their fleamarket excursion. Much much more is on the way because I love her! 🙂

I wish we still had her program on HGTV. I love her style and this home looks so inviting. Thank you for bringing it to us.

Hi Karen! Thanks so much for reading, and maybe I can start a revolution to get HGTV to air her show in the USA. Do they think we are not interested in off the grid homes that are sustainable and energy efficient!?! 🙂

Thanks for sharing this information! I have seen only a couple of Sarah’s shows on HGTV. I wish they would show all of them in the US. It would be SO MUCH BETTER than watching endless re-runs of “Fixer Upper” (not that I don’t like the show but HGTV re-runs it too much). I love her decorating style and just herself in general. It’s nice to know that she has done other series and that they can be found on Youtube.
