Interior Design Inspiration: Darryl Carter

Darryl Carter designed elegant, all white living room on Hello Loely

Spare, sophisticated, and serene are a few of my favorite words as well as synonyms for Washington D.C. based designer Darryl Carter’s beyond lovely sense of style. He knows his way around timeless and tranquil like nobody’s business, and last year, fine home furnishings maker Baker collaborated with Carter on The Darryl Carter Collection for Milling Road.

How did Darryl Carter approach this collection for Milling Road? According to Baker:

“…as he does in his private endeavors – with the trained eye of a curator and the innate intuitiveness of a collector. The result is an edited compilation of designs that have timeless appeal and a gathered sensibility. Carter explains, ‘In this age of ‘instant’ the home should remain a bastion of tranquility that expresses the individual. No two homes should ever be the same.’ This is the foundation upon which Milling Road has built its design philosophy and it was clear from the first meeting that Carter was the designer to continue the Milling Road’s avant garde style to furniture design.

A lawyer by training, Carter has said that ‘his career found him,’ capturing Carter’s imagination from a young age. His design career spans over two decades with achievements that include the authoring of two best-selling books, The New Traditional and The Collected Home, receiving editorial accolades through the publishing of many of his projects over the years, and receiving such milestone awards as Architectural Digest’s “AD’s Top 100,” Elle Decor’s “A-List” of American designers, and House Beautiful’s, “Who’s Who in American Design.””

“While some compositions I’ve designed may seem an odd amalgam, they are highly deliberate in their execution,” explained Carter. “I am prone to juxtaposing things that might otherwise never be placed in the company of one another. I am prone to contrast, opposites, and the tension between classical and modern.” ~Darryl Carter

I am smitten von smitten for Darryl and for One King’s Lane, where you can shop or at least swoonShop (I made that up) for the pieces Darryl Carter designed below (affiliate links follow: when you use them, you won’t pay anything extra, and I’ll earn a few pennies…yay!).

This really illustrates the strength of a monochrome white interior. It oozes class.
