For a tribute to Deborah Turbeville a few years back,

this editorial shoot for Vogue Italy featured young ballerinas

wearing Erika Cavallini Semi-Couture (AW 2014/15)

at the Circolo della Stampa de Milano.

and Julia Morozova.

The feminine, romantic, quiet, and graceful mood

is bound to charm and inspire you…

But first.

A wonderful new blog follower emailed me

yesterday asking about the significance of pointe

shoes to me personally  since she couldn’t

find a related post.

I explained to her that while I was never too

successful at ballet (I was always a better musician

than dancer), my dead pointe shoe collection

is about admiration for the feminine strength

and grace involved in this beautiful art form.

When I started Hello Lovely, you may remember

my header photo which featured a ballerina

in pointe shoes, jeans, and vintage jewelry.

Remember my blog header!?!

The ballerina is not me, and in fact,

my sister Jo and I shot her senior pictures

and styled her in my clothes and bling

at our French Country home which had

all that amazing natural light.

Behold! The real ballerina in the pointe shoes I shot for my blog header.

I step into my pointe shoes just for fun

photo shoots like this one to capture

a romantic, ethereal vibe.

Hi Michelle, What a beautifully inspiring post, thank you! I have always admired ballerinas but couldn't quite put it into words. You said it perfectly, with "feminine strength and grace." They are beautiful, dream-like, graceful athletes to me! The photos are exquisite…….I see many paintings inspired by them!

hi holly. yes, such warrior athletes! the determination and physical demands of the art are staggering yet these dancers seem to float through the air effortlessly. too many metaphors to name. thanks for visiting, friend–i'm so grateful for your comments. xox
