DIY: How to Create an Easy Artful Tablescape

The topic today? The artful tablescape.

I’m a big fan of less fussy table decor
that not only looks effortless but
practically IS since it incorporates
shopping your own house and yard
and allows the food

to play a starring role.

My own personal recipe for an artful and informal tablescape typically includes the following ingredients:

-White serving dishes

-Plenty of votive candlelight

-Blush pink or white roses in

a plain simple clear glass vase

or white ironstone pitcher

-Simple linen table runner

or kraft paper

-Vintage white cloth napkins

(monogrammed are my fav!)

You may remember I spent less than $20 for this
tablescape which I tweaked for Thanksgiving
and Christmas with a few thrifty additions.

Natural greenery from right outside
is easy and so perfect with white ironstone
and vintage FireKing.

Our dining table is a custom harvest table made
from antique barn boards, and I love
thinking about its farmhouse past.

Let’s turn to advice and inspiration

from interior stylist Kira Corbin

(via Architectural Digest):

1.

Go Naked.

Kira suggests skipping the tablecloth

to allow the natural beauty of wood

to play a starring role.

“I love the textures in hard surfaces, like wood and stone,” Corbin says. “A naked surface feels bold and confident.”

2.

There is Beauty Beyond Blooms.

She also recommends turning to foliage

such as eucalyptus, bare branches,

fluffy grasses, small artichoke flowers,

black and white poppies, and eryngiums.

“I like understated and architectural botanicals,

things that are harder to see the immediate beauty in.”

Oh my goodness, isn’t that a brilliant

description of her preferred style?

I do love the sound

 of architectural botanicals, don’t you?

And I know exactly what she means.

The term WONKY comes to mind

straight away, and so often it’s

those imperfect, more minimal and austere

choices that feel fresh, youthful,

modern, and in the spirit of

Kinfolk Home and slow living.

3.

Neutrals Rule.

I think this is a point not stressed often

enough…do bear in mind the colors of the menu

to be served when you create a scheme to keep all the

elements balanced and harmonious.

“A limited color palette for tableware helps pull everything together visually, making the colors of the meal pop.”
