My 1890 Dough Bowl from Hungary

You’ve indulged me whenever I wax on about beautiful
mends in vintage linens, and now there are
more mends to add to the obsession.

It’s a wabi sabi thang.
A broken into beautiful deal.
You get it; I know you do.
Someone took the time
to patch things  up,
adding another layer
of lovely.

I found this bowl from Hungary (1890) and went nuts.
Didn’t even notice the incredible mends at first glance!!

Saw metal reinforcements on the top, and then…

sweet mother…huge leather-like mends!

Are these amazingly lovely?

My husband and some friends were shopping

too and all agreed it had to be mine.

Yes. It’s that big.
Not sure where it will be placed

and what will go inside…what do you think?

Near the bowl, this mate-less wee ice skate from Holland

whispered to me it wanted to run away with

the dough bowl.

And who am I to argue with a skate and a dough bowl
with patchy mends from beyond the sea
who just want to continue to radiate
meaning and beauty?

Peace to you right where you are.

Oh, so beautiful, Michelle. A close friend of mine has a similar bowl (not nearly as beautiful but shh, I won't tell her) and has it sitting pretty atop her buffet. Inside, she has collected wine corks over the years. No matter what you do with your treasure, it rocks! Much Love, Lisa

Such beauty! Wouldn't it be fun to catch a glimpse at some of the domestic scenes these items have witnessed over their lifetime? I always end up wondering about the people who used old items so long ago.

Stunning!!!! I love them..they are so decorative, I have seen them look beautiful overflowing with fruit, artichokes, dried hydrangea….even saw one used as a centerpiece serving appetizers at a beautiful party we went to a few years ago.
    Its a stunner!

It's lovely and I bet it feels silky and beautiful. I have one similar which I love to fill with sand and candles and cart it outside on a summer evening as a centre piece wherever we decide to settle for the evening. When it's inside I fill it with all manner of things depending on my mood. Enjoy….B:) xo

    Life ~ whether
    written on a bowl
    or written on a
    face, is beautiful
    because of the
    imperfections, not
    despite them.

    Gorgeous. I've
    been on the hunt
    for one just like
    it, although I never
    would have dreamed
of the mends : ) so cool!

    xx Suzanne

Just gorgeous!! It does have your name all over it. I can't believe hoe big it is and even better when hubby agrees it needs to come home with you. 🙂

Your find is so tangible and rustically beautiful, the polar opposite of my flashy youthful ones! Oh such beautiful history in its composition! Love love love, its no wonder it had to come home with you!! The mends are perfection in their imperfection!

    What an amazing find!!

Hope your weekend is as fabulous as you xxx

Michele, I have a thing for dough bowls and this one is exceptionally beautiful. If only it could tell you the story of its life. I always look at older pieces and wonder what their story would be. Love it and you definitely found a treasure in this and the wee skate. happy weekend,

I agree too, this stunner of a bowl has your own name written all over it. I also go completely nuts over lovely old things with a strong sense of history and I'm so glad you took this baby home with you!

Hope you're having a beautiful weekend, my lovely!

The bowl is nice, but I really like the table!

Timeless beauties! Send that dough bowl my way when you get tired of it…

I have a similar bread bowl (but with 3 compartments). I put oranges, nuts and greenery in it during the winter holidays. Perhaps an idea for you too?

And hang the skates with some greenery on your Christmas front doorfor! A conversation piece for sure!

But what do I know. You are the great stylist.
