So many of us adore French Country inspired interiors,
and I love exploring the various expressions of it
by designers who honor it and add to the beauty.
My favorite expression is its airier, simpler side.

You may recall seeing the house tour for this
inspiring French County and modern farmhouse
details by Giannetti Home on this blog,
(photography by Lisa Romerein).

This San Diego home, known as OCEANSIDE
is lovely both inside and out, and you'll notice
Frenchy blue-greys, beachy aquas, sandy whites,
and the warmth of wood and antiques.

Today we'll dive deeper into this
flavor of Modern French Country

makes it special and how we might
achieve a similar mood in our own spaces.

7.
The Holy Trinity: Ageless, Classic, and Calm.
Designer Brooke Giannetti, who works with
her partner, architect Steve Giannetti,
says these three qualities guide their designs.

When we resist trends (or at the very least
avoid using EVERY trend in a space) and
make choices reflecting timelessly good design,
we're 1/3 of the way there!

8.
Limestone Lovely.
The choice of limestone for flooring and fireplaces
not only evokes a classic French mood, but it also
reinforces the feeling of calm since its tones
are light, warm, and comforting.

9.
Feminine With Less Frou Frou.
It's refreshing to see feminine decor
interpreted quietly, with delicate refinery
and not sugary sweet fanciful French excess.
Not only is this approach more friendly to
both sexes, but the effect is also more
fresh and modern.

10.
Think Beyond Over the Top.
I love the way the French go over the top in
so many instances design-related and otherwise,
but it's not always necessary or desirable when
the direction you're headed is more modern.
"Less" can work when the selections are
full of character, age, and soul.

11.
Built-ins.
Whether it's a window seat, shelving, bunks,
or cabinetry, the Giannettis create instant
age and architectural interest in spaces they
design by incorporating built-ins.

If you think about what is most appealing about
the interiors within a French Country farmhouse
or even a pretty Paris apartment, it is often the
lofty ceilings, paneled walls, vintage doors,
and parquet floors.

While it may not be possible to simply
commission a craftsman to whip up
a window seat or create a set of bunks,
working these into additions or new
builds makes good sense.

Additionally, if you are lucky enough to
have built-in shelves, think about how
you might re-work or refine them with
paint, plaster, or wood...maybe what they
need is subtraction of fussy trim rather than
any additions!

12.
Embrace the Unexpected.
It was a pleasant surprise to see these
basket-weave paved patios where we may
have anticipated expanses of gravel.

With all the expense and care devoted to
the incredible roof and tiles, doesn't
it make infinitely good sense to
design spaces where they can be enjoyed?

These outdoor entertaining spaces feel
like a charming French village!
